Tug of War

Skittles and Neil raced around the classroom. They knocked over paints and scattered the books.

Skittles grabbed Miss Wing's green hat. Then Neil grabbed the other side.

Miss Wing shouted at the birds but they didn't listen, they just kept playing tug of war with her hat!

  Polly looked at Ronita.

  Ronita looked at Polly.

And they both started to laugh!

Not So Easy

Polly looked at Ronita. Ronita looked at Polly.

It's not so easy to make friends just like that. They didn't talk to each other for a little while.

"I hve dungarees," said Ronita finally.

"Oh," said Polly. "I have a bird. At home."

"I have a bird!" said Ronita.

"No you don't," said Polly. "I have a bird."

"Yes I DO!" Ronita raised her voice.

"No you DON"T!" Polly raised hers back.

Shoes are Expensive

The walked along the harbour wall, but Polly didn't jump up on it as she usually did. Instead, she dragged the toes of her shoes on the cobbles.

"I also think," said Polly, "you should not have another baby while I am at school."

"OK, I won't do that," said Mummy.

"Good," said Polly. "Because, you know. You already have me and Neil. And that is Quite Enough."

"I agree," said Mummy. "Also, shoes are expensive."

Medium Like Me

Polly ate her bun and felt a bit better. The raindrops were making pretty patterns on the windows.

"I'm sorry about the play-dough and the raisins," she said.

"That's OK," said Mummy. Look around. It's not just you. Everybody is waiting."

Polly looked. All around the bakery people were looking at their watches and fiddling with their phones and staring out to sea.

"Are they waiting for puffins and daddies?" said Polly.

"Well, they're all waiting for someone," said her mummy.

  "Even the grown-ups?"

  "Even the grown-ups."

  "Do they feel sad too?"

Polly's mummy lifted Polly up onto her lap.

"It is always sad when people you love are far away," she said, "whether you are big or small."

"Or medium like me," said Polly.

"Or medium like you," said Mummy.

Waiting is Hard

Ouside, the storm grew stronger and stronger. There was still no Daddy and still no Neil. Even Mummy was standing at the window now.

"Waiting is hard," said Polly, taking her mummy's hand.

  "Yes it is," said Mummy.

It wasn't the Same

Polly tried to play with Wrong Puffin to help the time pass, but it wasn't the same as playing with Neil.

Nobody was fighting with Evil Rubbery Duckie.

Wrong Puffin didn't want any cereal. He didn't even want a lollipop.

And Neil missed the fluffy towels coming out of the drier.
